The Sad State of Canadian Mobile Access

If you’re a Canadian cell phone user the sad state of our country’s networks comes to you as no surprise. It’s no so much that the networks don’t work well enough. The real problem are the cell phone provider who value profits over customer satisfaction.

Nowhere is this more evident than the data rate access fees charged by the likes of Telus, Bell, and Rogers/Fido. While most providers outside of Canada charge reasonable rates, most Canadian providers charge into the hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month. How big of a difference is there? Well, Thomas Purves has a blog post illustrating exactly how bad things are.

How can we expect to be one of the technology leaders of the world with such exorbitant fees for mobile access? If you’re a individual or small business that depends on mobile access then Canada is definitely not the place to be. How sad is that?

What can we do to change that? Probably your best bet is to contact your member of parliament and/or the CRTC. I for one plan to do both and to top it off I refuse to sign up for data access from Rogers. Are you listening to me Rogers? I will not pay these outrageous data rates, EVER.
